Royal Victoria Place switches the lights on at 4.30pm on Saturday 14 November, free with no booking. Every festive date from 7 November to 3 January, listed.

Tunbridge Wells switches on its Christmas lights at 4.30pm on Saturday 14 November 2026, at Royal Victoria Place. The shopping centre has published the time itself: a free day of festive activities, open 9am to 7pm, with no need to book. Royal Tunbridge Wells Together, the town’s Business Improvement District, calls the same day the Christmas Kick Off, and confirmed it to T Wells Today on 8 September along with eighteen other festive dates.

Updated 3 October: Royal Victoria Place has confirmed the switch-on time, 4.30pm, and the day’s programme. It has also moved the Enchanted Cabin’s last day to 24 December, settling the clash noted below.

The switch-on: Saturday 14 November at 4.30pm

Royal Victoria Place’s own listing says the centre will host “a full day of festive entertainment and activities before we switch on the Christmas lights at 4:30pm” (Royal Victoria Place). The centre is open from 9am to 7pm that day, and the event is free with no booking. Before the lights go on, the centre lists:

  • The Enchanted Cabin, the Father Christmas grotto, which opens that day (paid, from £15 a child, booked ahead).
  • Window Wonderland, the shop window competition. Voting opens on 14 November and closes on 14 December; the windows stay up to 24 December.
  • The Snow Globe Ticket Grab, run by the Assembly Hall team: step into a walk-in snow globe and catch a snowflake for the chance of a ticket to Cinderella. It runs every Saturday and Sunday from 14 November to 20 December, and the centre lists it as “Pay at Event”.
  • The Magic of Christmas with Mrs Christmas and Jovie the Elf, 30-minute storytelling sessions at 10am, 11.15am, 1pm, 2.15pm and 3.30pm, free with no booking, every Saturday and Sunday from 14 November to 20 December.

The centre has not said who is switching the lights on.

The Christmas Kick Off is the BID’s name for what most people call the lights switch-on. In 2024 it was a Saturday teatime event, Saturday 16 November at 5pm, with Ore Oduba, then starring in the Assembly Hall panto, and Santa doing the honours (KentOnline). In 2025 it fell on Saturday 15 November, which is why that date is still printed on some pages that have not been updated.

Two other things happen the same day: the Mental Elf Run and the Amelia Scott’s knitted Christmas tree.

The Pantiles and Royal Victoria Place

The Pantiles has published its own 2026 events list, with the Christmas markets’ wooden chalets along the colonnade from 13 November to 24 December 2026 (The Pantiles), and two market dates either side: the Pantiles Market on 7 and 8 November and the Calverley Precinct Market on 29 November and 20 December.

The market’s own page now gives the hours: Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 13 November, 11am to 8pm, then every day from Friday 18 to Wednesday 23 December, 11am to 8pm, closing at 6pm on Christmas Eve. It is free to attend (The Pantiles).

Royal Victoria Place announced its grotto on 1 September. The Enchanted Cabin, run by Once Upon a Wish Events, is a personal meet and greet with Father Christmas guided by his elves, tickets from £15 per child including a gift the child chooses (Royal Victoria Place). The centre’s page now runs it from 14 November to 24 December.

Royal Victoria Place has also published its Christmas opening hours: 8am to 7pm on Friday 18, Saturday 19 and Monday 21 to Wednesday 23 December, 10.30am to 4.30pm on Sunday 20 December, 8am to 5pm on Christmas Eve, closed Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, and 9am to 6pm on Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve. Individual shops may differ (Royal Victoria Place).

Kidsbury, the children’s venue in the centre, runs “The Christmas Elf and the Impossible Wish”, a 45-minute show with live music, from 4 to 31 December (Royal Victoria Place).

Christmas at Bedgebury: 20 November to 31 December

Forestry England has the fullest 2026 listing of anything in the borough. The illuminated trail at Bedgebury National Pinetum near Goudhurst runs on selected evenings from Friday 20 November to Thursday 31 December 2026, with a new Laser Garden alongside the returning Christmas Cathedral (Forestry England).

Trail dates are:

  • Wednesday 9 to Thursday 24 December
  • Saturday 26 to Thursday 31 December

Entry is timed, generally every 15 minutes between 4pm and 8.15pm, and advance booking is essential. Prices, booking fees included:

Off peak tickets are on selected midweek dates. Parking is £10 a car and must be booked in advance, which is the charge people most often miss. Forestry England members get one free parking space if they book the “car parking (members)” ticket, and no other parking ticket carries the offer. Infant and personal assistant places are free but must be booked alongside a full price ticket.

The Polar Express is back at Spa Valley

The Polar Express train ride returns to Spa Valley Railway at Tunbridge Wells West for 2026. The operator, PNP Events, confirms the return on its own booking site and says more than 45,000 guests travelled last season, but it does not publish the run’s dates on that page (Spa Valley Polar Express). Visit Tunbridge Wells lists it as 7 November to 30 December. Check the booking site before planning around those dates.

The trap: two council-run sites still show 2025

Two pages the search engines like are stale, and both will hand you last year’s Christmas.

  • festivetw.com, the borough council’s own festive site, still says the ice rink opens “Friday 5th December 2025” and still names Sleeping Beauty as the Assembly Hall pantomime. The 2026 show is Cinderella.
  • The Visit Tunbridge Wells Christmas page mixes years. Alongside genuine 2026 lines it carries the stale “15 November” switch-on, “Christmas at The Pantiles various dates 16/11 to 24/12/25”, a Bewl Water description written for 2025, and a pantomime billing for Sleeping Beauty running 13 to 31 December, none of which matches this year.

Parking and getting in

The switch-on and the markets are all within a few minutes’ walk of each other, between Royal Victoria Place, Calverley Precinct and The Pantiles. Town-centre car parks fill on market Saturdays.
